Sečovlje/Sicciole Saltpans Nature Park
Sečovlje, Slovenian Littoral, Slovenia
Sečovlje Saltpans Nature Park in the Slovenian Littoral region of Slovenia is a protected landscape park covering historic salt evaporation ponds where traditional salt production has been practiced for centuries, with origins possibly dating back to Roman times.
The saltpans were fully formed during the Middle Ages and remained economically active until the mid-20th century, with salt still harvested manually today using methods passed down through generations. The park consists of two main areas: Lera, where salt production continues, and Fontanigge, which is now a rich habitat for diverse plant and animal species.
This saline ecosystem provides refuge for nearly 300 bird species, many of which breed in the area, making it an important ornithological site and a Ramsar wetland of international importance. The saltpans also preserve cultural heritage through the remnants of medieval salt-worker settlements and the Museum of Salt Making, which offers insights into the history and techniques of salt production.
Today, the park balances salt production with conservation, tourism, and cultural preservation, aiming to maintain its unique natural and historical values while supporting biodiversity in this rare Mediterranean saline landscape.
