Verified Simontornya Castle

Simontornya, Hungary, Hungary

Simontornya Castle is a historic fortress in the town of Simontornya, Hungary, whose origins date back to the 13th century.

Its name means “Simon’s Tower,” referring to its founder, Simon, son of Salamon, who built the original stronghold in the marshlands near the Sió River. Over the centuries, the castle was expanded and transformed by several noble families. Gothic additions were made in the 14th century, and later it was converted into an elegant Renaissance residence with the help of Italian craftsmen, making it one of Hungary’s notable examples of medieval and Renaissance architecture.

The castle also played an important military role. It was occupied by the Ottoman Empire in 1543 and remained under Ottoman control for nearly 150 years before being recaptured in 1686. It later served as a fortress during Rákóczi’s War of Independence and was eventually used as a granary. Today, Simontornya Castle is a restored cultural and historical attraction where visitors can explore exhibitions, preserved architectural features, and centuries of Hungarian history.
