Somlói Castle is a medieval fortress perched on Somló Hill near the village of Doba in western Hungary.

Built in the 13th century after the Mongol invasions, it occupied a strategic position atop an extinct volcanic hill, allowing it to oversee the surrounding countryside and important routes. The castle passed through the hands of several influential Hungarian noble families, including Pál Kinizsi and Archbishop Tamás Bakócz.

Under Bakócz’s ownership in the late 15th century, it was extensively rebuilt with Renaissance features, including a chapel, making it both a stronghold and a residence. During the Ottoman wars, Somlói Castle served as an important defensive fortress and successfully resisted multiple Turkish attacks.

Its military importance gradually declined in later centuries, and by the late 18th century it had been largely abandoned and left to ruin. Today, the castle’s impressive ruins remain a popular destination for visitors. The site offers panoramic views over the famous Somló wine region, surrounding hills, and vineyards, combining historical significance with striking natural scenery.
