Sümeg Castle
Sümeg, Hungary, Hungary
Sümeg Castle is one of Hungary’s largest and best-preserved medieval fortresses, standing atop Castle Hill above the town of Sümeg in Veszprém County.
It was built in the mid to late 13th century during the reign of King Béla IV, following the Mongol invasion, and was expanded and strengthened over the centuries. The castle played an important defensive role in Hungarian history and became the residence of the bishops of Veszprém after the nearby city of Veszprém fell to the Ottoman Empire in 1552.
Although it endured several sieges and conflicts, it was never conquered by the Ottomans. After suffering damage and fire during the early 18th century, the fortress gradually fell into ruin. Extensive restoration work in the 20th and 21st centuries transformed it into one of the country’s most impressive historical attractions.
Today, Sümeg Castle attracts visitors with its restored towers, walls, exhibitions, medieval reenactments, and panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. It is widely regarded as one of Hungary’s finest examples of a medieval hilltop fortress.
