Szegvári Vár
Szegvár, Hungary, Hungary
Szegvári Vár was a fortified castle complex in the village of Szegvár, located at the meeting of the Kurca and Kórógy streams in southern Hungary.
The site developed from a medieval noble residence, and in 1523 János Dóczy built a walled castle on the location of an earlier manor house, making it an important regional stronghold. The castle played a role during the political and military conflicts of the 16th and 17th centuries. It changed ownership several times, suffered destruction during wars, and the surrounding settlement was heavily damaged during the Ottoman era.
In the 18th century, Count Sándor Károlyi rebuilt the estate, and the site later became the seat of Csongrád County administration. The historic building, known today as the Károlyi Castle, served various functions over time, including a county hall, school, orphanage, and social institution. It now functions as a community and cultural center, preserving the memory of the former Szegvár castle.
