Szendrői Vár
Szendrő, Hungary, Hungary
Szendrői Vár is a historic hilltop fortress in the town of Szendrő in northeastern Hungary.
Its origins date back to the Middle Ages, and over time it became one of the most important defensive strongholds in Borsod County. The castle played a significant role during the Ottoman wars and served as a key border fortress protecting northern Hungary. The fortifications were expanded during the 16th and 17th centuries, and the town itself became an important administrative and military center.
After the War of Independence led by Prince Francis II Rákóczi, the castle was intentionally demolished in 1707 to prevent its future military use. Today, only ruins of the castle remain on Castle Hill, but the site is a popular attraction thanks to its historical significance and panoramic views over the Bódva Valley. Visitors can also explore exhibitions that present the history of the castle and the surrounding region.
