Szerencs Castle
Szerencs, Hungary, Hungary
Szerencs Castle, also known as the Rákóczi Castle, is a historic fortress in the town of Szerencs at the gateway to Hungary’s Tokaj-Hegyalja wine region.
The site began as a medieval monastery in the 13th century and was transformed into a fortified castle during the 16th century as the area gained strategic military importance. The castle is closely linked to the powerful Rákóczi family, who expanded it into a Renaissance fortress and residence. One of its most important historical moments occurred in 1605, when István Bocskai was elected Prince of Transylvania at an assembly held in Szerencs.
Over time, the castle lost its military role and was adapted into a noble residence. After extensive restoration in the 20th century, it became a cultural center that houses the Zemplén Museum and other exhibitions. Today, visitors can explore its historic buildings, learn about regional history, and enjoy one of the most significant architectural landmarks in northeastern Hungary.
