Taródi Vár is a unique castle in Sopron that was built almost entirely by one man, István Taródi.

Inspired by medieval fortresses, he began constructing the stone castle in 1959 and devoted more than fifty years of work to the project, continuing until his death in 2010. Located in the Lőverek hills, the castle covers more than 4,000 square meters and features many elements typical of a medieval stronghold, including towers, a drawbridge, a moat, spiral staircases, a knight’s hall, and a well.

Taródi studied historic Hungarian castles and used them as inspiration, especially Somoskő Castle. Today, Taródi Vár is one of Sopron’s most unusual attractions and operates as a private museum managed by the builder’s family. It stands as a remarkable example of dedication, creativity, and personal determination, offering visitors a fairytale-like glimpse into one man’s lifelong dream.
