Tata Castle
Tata, Hungary, Hungary
Tata Castle is a picturesque medieval fortress located on the shore of Lake Öreg (Old Lake) in the town of Tata, western Hungary.
Built in the 14th century, it became a favorite residence of Hungarian kings, especially Sigismund of Luxembourg and Matthias Corvinus, who transformed it into an elegant Renaissance-style royal retreat. Because of its strategic lakeside location, the castle also served as an important defensive stronghold during conflicts with the Ottoman Empire.
It was repeatedly besieged, captured, and rebuilt over the centuries before eventually losing its military role. The castle’s distinctive appearance today reflects later renovations carried out by the Esterházy family, who helped preserve the surviving structures. Set beside the water and surrounded by scenic landscapes, it is considered one of Hungary’s most beautiful castles.
