Thury Castle is a well-preserved medieval fortress located in the center of Várpalota, western Hungary.

Its origins date back to the late 14th century, when it was built by the influential Újlaki family and later expanded into a strong defensive stronghold. The castle is best known for its role in the wars against the Ottoman Empire during the 16th century. It was named after György Thury, a celebrated Hungarian commander who successfully defended the fortress against Ottoman attacks and became a legendary figure in Hungarian history.

Featuring a distinctive rectangular layout with four corner towers, Thury Castle is considered one of Hungary’s best-preserved historic castles. Over the centuries it changed hands several times, experienced periods of occupation and damage, and was eventually restored. Today, the castle serves as a cultural and museum center, hosting historical exhibitions, local heritage collections, mining and chemistry museums, guided tours, and community events.
