Tokaj

Northeastern Hungary, Hungary

Tokaj is a small historic town in northeastern Hungary, in Borsod‑Abaúj‑Zemplén County, sitting at the meeting point of the Bodrog and Tisza rivers. It is best known as the heart of the Tokaj‑Hegyalja wine region, one of Hungary’s most famous wine districts and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2002. The area has produced Tokaji wine for over a thousand years, including the world‑renowned sweet Tokaji Aszú, made from botrytized grapes in a unique volcanic‑hill landscape above the rivers. The town itself draws visitors with its compact old‑town center, wine cellars, and landmarks such as the Catholic church, the Bacchus fountain, and proximity to the Great Synagogue and Greek Catholic church. Today Tokaj is a popular base for wine‑tasting tours, cellar‑walking, and exploring the picturesque vineyards and small villages that make up the larger Tokaj wine region.
