Verified Török-Vár

Máriakéménd, Hungary, Hungary

Török-Vár is the ruin of a small medieval castle located on Vár-hegy (Castle Hill) near Máriakéménd in Baranya County.

The fortress was likely built in the late 13th century by the nobleman Óvári Konrád and served as the center of a local estate during the Middle Ages. The castle experienced conflicts and changes of ownership during its history, and although it was rebuilt after being damaged in the early 14th century, it eventually fell into ruin.

The name “Török-Vár” (“Turkish Castle”) probably originated later and does not necessarily mean the castle was used by the Ottomans. Today, only a few foundation walls and earthworks remain visible on the wooded hilltop. A notable feature of the site is the nearby Remete-lyuk (“Hermit’s Cave”), a man-made tunnel-like chamber beneath the ruins that is associated with local legends.
