Várgesztes Castle, also known as Gesztes Castle, is a medieval hilltop fortress located above the village of Várgesztes in the Vértes Mountains of northwestern Hungary. The castle was originally built in the late 13th century by the powerful Csák family and occupied a strategic position overlooking important routes through the region. Over the centuries, the castle passed through the hands of Hungarian kings and noble families, serving both as a defensive stronghold and, at times, as a royal hunting residence. During the Ottoman wars, it regained military importance and was involved in several conflicts before eventually falling into decline. Although parts of the original structure were damaged by wars and later dismantled for building materials, the castle was restored in the 20th century, helping to preserve its historic character. Today, Várgesztes Castle is one of the most significant landmarks of the Vértes region, attracting visitors with its medieval architecture, rich history, and panoramic views of the surrounding forests and hills.
