Visegrád Castle - Citadel
Hungary, Hungary
Visegrád Castle, also known as the Citadel (Fellegvár), is one of Hungary’s most famous medieval fortresses, dramatically perched on a hill above the Danube Bend north of Budapest.
Built in the mid-13th century after the Mongol invasion, it was part of a major defensive system established by King Béla IV to strengthen the kingdom’s borders. The castle became an important royal residence and political center during the 14th century when Visegrád served as the capital of Hungary. It hosted the famous 1335 meeting of the kings of Hungary, Poland, and Bohemia, an event that later inspired the name of the modern Visegrád Group.
The fortress also safeguarded the Holy Crown of Hungary on several occasions. Over the centuries, the citadel was expanded, besieged, and damaged during wars, including conflicts with the Ottoman Empire. Although parts of the complex fell into ruin, extensive restoration has preserved many sections of the fortress and its historical atmosphere.
Today, the Citadel is one of Hungary’s most visited historic landmarks, renowned for its medieval exhibitions and spectacular panoramic views of the Danube Bend, often considered among the most beautiful vistas in the country.
