Zrínyi Castle in Szigetvár is one of Hungary’s most important historic fortresses, best known for the famous Siege of Szigetvár in 1566.

The castle was defended by the Croatian-Hungarian nobleman Nikola IV Zrinski (Miklós Zrínyi) and a small garrison against a much larger Ottoman army led by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. Although the Ottomans eventually captured the fortress after a 33-day siege, the defenders’ determined resistance caused heavy losses and delayed the Ottoman advance toward Vienna.

Both Zrinski and Suleiman died during the campaign, making the battle one of the most significant events in Central European history. The castle became a lasting symbol of courage and sacrifice and remains deeply important in both Hungarian and Croatian history. The siege inspired literary works, operas, and historical commemorations for centuries.
